Tucked in the woods of South Carolina along one of the longest blackwater rivers in North America, the Edisto River Treehouses are accessible only by canoe. Guests paddle 13 miles for an overnight stay in one of three rustic and secluded treehouses and spend the next day paddling another 10 miles to the Refuge Outpost.
Operated by Scott and Anne Kennedy of Carolina Heritage Outfitters, the Edisto River Treehouses are located within the private 150-acre Edisto River Refuge in Canadys, South Carolina.
Canoe trips are unguided, but this quiet river makes for an easy paddle. Depending on the time of year and water levels, the Edisto River’s current flows at between 2 and 4 miles per hour, making downstream paddling easy and relaxing. There are no rapids, whitewater or dams on the Edisto River.
Overnight guests begin their journey with a 13-mile canoe expedition along the Edisto River, which can take about four hours to complete. The sandy riverbanks offer quiet stops along the way, as well as ample wildlife viewing.
Three tin-roofed treehouses, built of local pine, are perched about 15 feet above the ground. The small treehouse sleeps two people; the medium treehouse sleeps three to six people; and the large treehouse sleeps five to eight people.
Each facility has a deck and is equipped with an outdoor gas grill, table and chairs, propane stove and lamp, pots and pans, and plates and utensils. Futon mattresses are located in screened sleeping lofts. There is no electricity or running water, but outhouse facilities are located near each unit.
After spending the night in a treehouse, it’s back to paddling another 10 miles to the Refuge Outpost. Shuttle service is part of the package for guests.
Knowledge of basic canoe handling is useful. Individuals, groups and families with children 11 years and older are welcome.
Treehouse prices are per person and include canoeing and a one-night stay. For more information or to schedule a trip, visit the Carolina Heritage Outfitters website or call 843-563-5051.
